Unit I: From Time Immemorial: Traditional Life, Pre-1800
Describes traditional Salish and Pend d’Oreille lifeways through the memories and stories of tribal
elders such as Pete Beaverhead, Louise Lumprey, Paul Antoine, and Johnny Arlee. Includes
extensive Salish language vocabulary to accompany the text.

Unit II: Three Eagles and Grizzly Bear Looking Up Period, 1800-1840
Weaves together elders’ stories, eyewitness accounts by white people, and a trader’s inventory
to describe a period of exciting change from horses, trader’s goods, and missionary teachings.
Conflict with Plains Indian tribes pushed the Salish and Pend d’Oreille into a military alliance
with the white trappers and traders.

Unit III: Victor and Alexander Period, 1840-1870
Diplomacy guided the tribes as they worked to protect their interests while keeping the peace
with an expanding white population. Greedy white whiskey traders and unkept promises by the
United States government complicated life for Salish and Pend d’Oreille leaders. Includes a gallery
of pencil portraits of Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Iroquois leaders in western Montana during the
1850s period.

The Lower Flathead River: A Cultural, Historical, and Scientific Resource

A resource designed for teachers and students in the later high school years. Includes a
stunning portfolio of river scenes by photographer Jake Wallis; interviews with Salish, Pend
d’Oreille, and Kootenai elders about the traditional use of the river; an essay by Thompson
Smith about the history of the river and Kerr dam; a summary of the geology, plants, and
animals of the area; and an introduction to the ecological changes and problems impacting the
river.

This book is a story of survival and hope taken from an interview with a Salish elder in the 1930's. During the interview, elder Zephire Lumpry, told a powerful story of young boy experiencing the first smallpox epidemic that struck the Salish around 1780.
