Each woman’s story is told in her voice through the inspired writing of Jennifer Greene, Salish poet and author. Heart of the Bitterroot incorporates elements of traditional songs, stories, flute, piano and violin and sounds from the land together to create magic.

Story lovers and educators alike will appreciate the valuable information contained in the 40-page companion study guide. The study guide provides the historic background of each woman along with a narrative that describes how a young woman grew up long ago in a traditional Salish community. The traditional songs are identified and their uses explained. Full page images of historic photographs of Salish women and Salish beadwork are included to complement one of the classroom activities.

Montana Content Standards’ connections are outlined and classroom applications and activities for the classroom are included for multiple content areas. Completing the study guide is an annotated bibliography of books authored by American Indian women. Each annotation also suggests the grade level the book could be used with.
